Xi-Text Features

Basic Features

Event Driven for Maximum Performance
Xi-Text delivers maximum performance from your systems and printers without consuming your valuable system resources. CPU usage is minimized by our event-driven architecture, and communication between systems is handled via specialized daemons engineered for efficiency and reliability. Networked printing occurs in "real time," allowing printer faults to be detected and corrected without potential loss of print data. Event-driven software design benefits all system users, from the smallest desktop to the largest enterprise server.

Full-Screen Interactive Job and Printer Control
Designed for ease of use and effortless control, Xi-Text shows both printers and print jobs at a glance in a concise, easy-to-use full screen display. Control functions are accomplished by a simple one or two keystroke sequence. Motif users enjoy the extra convenience of mouse support and pop-up windows.

Unlimited Printers and Print Jobs
Limited only by your system's memory and disk resources, Xi-Text provides support for an unlimited number of users, printers and spooled print jobs. This allows Xi-Text to accomodate you as your business grows.

Enterprise-Class Print Manager
Xi-Text features such as font selection, print orientation and paper tray selection can be handled without manual intervention. Automatic banner generation, forms alignment patterns, job prioritization with operator overrides, and e-mail notification when jobs are completed are all features you would expect from an enterprise-class print manager.

Job Restart and Selective Print
Any print job which is interrupted by hardware or communication errors, or by operator intervention, may be restarted at the point of interruption, at the beginning of the document, or at any specified page. Xi-Text also allows you to specify a range of pages to be printed, which can result in significant paper cost savings.

Compatibility with Existing Systems
Xi-Text interfaces effortlessly with applications configured to use basic UNIX lp print services. An interface program translates lp command syntax into the proper commands for Xi-Text operation. Xi-Text works with virtually any print device and can interface to external spoolers, networked printers or printers accessed via terminal servers.

User Interfaces for Every Need
Regardless of your operating environment, Xi-Text offers complete print management control. Xi-Text is easily managed via command line calls, or by way of a character-mode menu. Microsoft Windows and X-Motif user interface options are also available. Xi-Text accommodates the style and preferences of your administrators and your users.

Broad Platform Availability
Xi-Text is deliverable now on the broadest range of UNIX and Linux platforms in the market. You can choose Xi-Text with confidence, knowing that your selection of UNIX systems is not restricted by issues of product availability.

Advanced Features

Printer Pooling
Printers of similar capabilities can be assigned to the same class, allowing Xi-Text to automatically distribute waiting print jobs to the next available printer in the class.

Extensive Job and Forms Control Options
Xi-Text is unequaled in its flexibility and range of printer and forms options. Your printing environment is always evolving, and you need a print management system that can keep up with the changes.

Transparent Networking
In a network, Xi-Text provides transparent access to any printer by any authorized user. All printers are identified and accessed by name, without regard to their physical location or the communications hardware involved. As new printers and systems are added, Xi-Text automatically registers these resources to all other Xi-Text systems in the network.

Security and User Access Control
Configuration options in Xi-Text allow or deny access to printers and system features on a user-by-user basis. System defaults allow you to set basic access levels for the majority of your users, and these can be easily modified for users with special printing requirements.

Chargeback Accounting
For chargeback or usage analysis, Xi-Text maintains detailed logs of print volume, printer and forms usage. Custom charges can be tracked by printer and form type, and there is even an option to apply extra charges to jobs that are moved up in the queue by priority changes.

Comprehensive API
An optional Application Program Interface (API) is available for sites which need tight integration between Xi-Text and their applications, or have unique printing requirements. All Xi-Text functionality is made available programmatically through the API.

Custom Configuration
Custom printer configuration files allow you to define initialization and deinitialization data, port configuration information, special forms handling, font specifications and other printer configuration data specific to your printers and print jobs.
